Asian markets rebound on Wednesday as South Korea and Japan lead gains

Asian markets open higher as technology rally lifts sentiment

Asian stock markets opened Wednesday, 21 October, on a largely positive note, recovering from Tuesday’s technology-led sell-off as stronger corporate earnings on Wall Street restored investor confidence. South Korea and Japan led the advance, while Australian shares struggled to establish momentum amid persistent concerns over interest rates, commodity prices and global economic uncertainty.

Japan advances on stronger exports
Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 climbed approximately 1% in early trading, supported by renewed interest in technology and industrial companies.

Japanese export figures provided additional encouragement. Exports increased 16.7% year-on-year in September, reflecting demand for automobiles, semiconductors and artificial intelligence-related products.

However, elevated energy prices continued to weigh on Japan’s trade balance, highlighting the country’s vulnerability to disruptions in global oil supplies.

South Korea leads the regional recovery
South Korea’s Kospi emerged as one of the strongest performers, gaining approximately 2% during early trading before extending its advance.

Technology and semiconductor shares recovered following Tuesday’s sharp losses, reflecting renewed investor appetite for companies exposed to artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The rebound suggested that investors remained willing to support the sector despite growing concerns over valuations, financing costs and the sustainability of global AI investment.

Australia opens cautiously
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 entered Wednesday’s session with a modestly positive outlook after futures indicated an opening gain of approximately 0.4%.

Actual trading proved less convincing, with the benchmark subsequently hovering around unchanged levels.

Mining and property-related companies faced pressure, while expectations of potentially higher interest rates from the Reserve Bank of Australia continued to influence sentiment.

The Australian dollar remained relatively firm, supported by expectations that domestic monetary policy could remain restrictive.

China and Hong Kong show mixed signals
Mainland Chinese and Hong Kong equities displayed a less decisive opening pattern.

Investors remained cautious about China’s economic recovery, international trade relations and the outlook for corporate profitability.

Regional technology shares were particularly sensitive to developments in US markets and concerns over the cost of financing large-scale AI investments.

Wall Street provides support
Tuesday’s American trading session provided a constructive backdrop.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose approximately 1%, while the S&P 500 gained around 0.3%. Technology shares delivered a more mixed performance.

For Asian investors, the immediate focus remains corporate earnings, oil prices, central bank policy and whether Wednesday’s recovery can develop into a sustained regional advance.
