Global markets close mixed on Friday as Wall Street slumps and Europe and Asia recover

Global markets close mixed on Friday as Wall Street slumps and Europe and Asia recover

Global financial markets ended Friday, 16 October 2026, sharply divided, with Wall Street suffering another technology-led sell-off while European and several Asian exchanges recorded gains. Rising oil prices, persistent inflation and growing doubts about the financial sustainability of artificial intelligence investments continued to dominate investor sentiment.

Asia: Japan and South Korea recover
Asian markets delivered a mixed performance after a volatile week.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 1.39% to close at 65,324.29, while South Korea’s KOSPI advanced 2.05%, supported by renewed buying in semiconductor stocks.

India recorded particularly strong gains, with the Sensex rising 2.68% and the Nifty 50 advancing 2.31%.

China’s markets remained less convincing, reflecting continued concerns about economic growth and investor confidence. Indonesia suffered particularly severe selling pressure, highlighting the vulnerability of emerging markets to shifts in international capital flows.

Europe: Major exchanges finish higher
European equities recovered despite continuing uncertainty over energy prices and interest rates.

Germany’s DAX gained 0.95%, Britain’s FTSE 100 rose 0.38%, and France’s CAC 40 added 0.28%.

The broader STOXX Europe 600 advanced 0.72%, supported by selective buying across industrial, financial and defensive sectors.

European investors appeared more resilient than their American counterparts, although high energy costs remained a significant concern for manufacturers and consumers.

Middle East and Africa: Energy dominates sentiment
Middle Eastern markets remained heavily influenced by geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding regional oil supplies.

Several Gulf exchanges had completed their trading week on Thursday, with Saudi Arabia’s Tadawul declining 0.32% and Dubai’s general index losing 1.05% in their latest sessions.

African markets faced similar external pressures, particularly from energy costs, currency movements and changing global risk appetite. Regional performance nevertheless remained uneven, with domestic economic conditions continuing to influence individual exchanges.

Americas: Technology stocks drag Wall Street lower
American equities finished Friday firmly in negative territory.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.34% to 52,002.41, while the S&P 500 fell 1.09% to 7,659.44.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite suffered the steepest decline, dropping 2.15% to 26,140.03.

Semiconductor manufacturers and companies associated with artificial intelligence infrastructure were among the hardest hit, as investors questioned whether enormous capital expenditures could generate sufficient returns.

Elsewhere in the Americas, Brazil’s Bovespa gained 0.54%, offering a contrast to Wall Street’s decline.

Oil, inflation and the outlook
Oil prices rose sharply amid renewed concerns about Middle Eastern supplies, adding pressure to an already difficult inflation outlook.

Government bonds attracted defensive investment as traders reassessed expectations for American interest rates.

Friday’s closing figures illustrated an increasingly fragmented global investment environment. While European and several Asian exchanges demonstrated resilience, the American technology sector remained under pressure.

The coming week’s corporate earnings and inflation developments will be important tests of whether global markets can stabilise or face another period of volatility.
