Asian markets plunge as AI chip sell-off shakes investor confidence

Asian markets open lower as oil and borrowing costs weigh on sentiment

Asian stock markets opened sharply lower on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, as a major sell-off in semiconductor shares spread across the region. South Korea suffered particularly heavy losses, while Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese equities declined amid growing concerns over artificial intelligence valuations, Chinese competition and geopolitical uncertainty.

South Korean technology stocks lead the decline South Korea’s KOSPI index plunged more than 6% during early trading, with losses subsequently exceeding 7%, marking one of its sharpest declines in recent months.

Semiconductor giants Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix came under intense selling pressure, falling approximately 8% and 9% respectively.

The downturn followed reports of technological advances by Chinese memory-chip manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies, raising concerns about increasing competition and the sustainability of exceptional profits among established semiconductor producers.

Japan and China follow regional losses Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped approximately 2.6% as trading resumed following Monday’s public holiday. Technology investor SoftBank Group lost around 8%, while semiconductor equipment manufacturers also declined.

Taiwanese shares fell approximately 2%, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company retreating as investors reassessed the outlook for global chip demand.

Chinese equities weakened, with the Shanghai Composite falling around 1.1%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index also declined by approximately 1%.

The broader MSCI Asia-Pacific index excluding Japan lost more than 2%, reaching its lowest level in over two months.

Oil prices and inflation add pressure Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continued to influence financial markets, keeping energy prices elevated despite a modest decline in crude oil during Asian trading.

Brent crude traded around $105 per barrel, reinforcing concerns about inflation and the possibility that central banks may maintain restrictive monetary policies for longer.

Meanwhile, the US dollar remained close to an 18-month high, reflecting continued demand for relatively defensive assets.

Investors await US earnings and inflation figures Attention is now turning towards quarterly earnings from major American banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Wells Fargo.

Investors will examine the results for evidence of how higher borrowing costs are affecting lending, corporate activity and consumer finances.

Upcoming US inflation figures will also be closely watched for indications of the Federal Reserve’s next monetary policy decisions.

Tuesday’s sharp Asian market declines underline growing investor uncertainty over technology valuations, global economic conditions and the durability of the artificial intelligence investment boom.

Market figures reflect Tuesday morning trading and are not closing prices.
