Oil and interest rates shape Wednesday’s outlook for Arab, African and European markets

Oil and interest rates shape Wednesday’s outlook for Arab, African and European markets

Higher oil prices and a firmer dollar provided a cautious backdrop to Wednesday, 7 October, as investors across Arab, African and European markets assessed geopolitical risks and awaited US monetary policy signals. South Africa’s rand weakened in early trading, while confirmed opening equity figures remained incomplete across the three regions at publication.

The morning followed gains on Wall Street and a positive European session on Tuesday. However, renewed concerns about energy supplies complicated the outlook, with investors monitoring developments in the Middle East and weather-related risks to US oil production.

European markets follow Tuesday’s gains
European equities entered Wednesday after the STOXX 600 closed Tuesday 0.48% higher at 636.63. Germany’s DAX gained 0.77%, Britain’s FTSE 100 rose 0.42% and France’s CAC 40 advanced 0.40% in that previous session.

Those gains accompanied an easing in eurozone bond yields, offering some relief after recent pressure from inflation and fiscal concerns. Wednesday’s early market focus remained on whether that improvement could withstand another increase in energy costs.

These figures are Tuesday’s closing changes, rather than confirmed movements at Wednesday’s opening.

Arab markets assess regional risks
Gulf investors approached the session following a mixed Tuesday. Saudi Arabia’s benchmark gained 1.1%, while Qatar declined 0.3% and Abu Dhabi slipped 0.1%. Dubai finished broadly unchanged.

Regional trading remained sensitive to developments affecting oil production and shipping. Higher crude prices can support producers’ revenues, but supply disruption and military escalation also create uncertainty for businesses and investors.

Verified Wednesday opening changes for these benchmarks were not yet available in the reports reviewed.

African trading shows currency pressure
South Africa’s rand traded at 16.5850 per dollar at 06:35 GMT on Wednesday, approximately 0.3% weaker than its previous close. The government’s benchmark 2035 bond also softened, with its yield increasing two basis points to 8.825%.

South Africa’s dependence on imported fuel leaves it exposed to rising oil costs. In Egypt, the EGX30 had fallen 0.5% on Tuesday; Wednesday’s opening direction remained unverified.

Across the regions, minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting were a key scheduled event, with investors seeking guidance on the outlook for US interest rates.
