A solar microgrid installed by Jamaican company SunTerra Energy Solutions is helping protect a Kingston warehouse that stores and distributes medicines. The project shows how Caribbean organisations can add reliable power at the point where it is needed, without waiting for a wider overhaul of the electricity grid.
SunTerra and its partner Innovus Power announced the commissioning of the system at the National Health Fund’s Pharmaceutical Division warehouse in April 2026. Funding support came from the humanitarian organisation Direct Relief. The companies designed the installation around the facility’s need for dependable electricity as well as lower long-term energy costs.
A practical leap forward
The appeal of a microgrid is its local scale. Solar generation and controls can be tailored to one site, allowing an essential facility to manage more of its own power needs. For a medicines warehouse, continuity matters: an interruption can affect storage and distribution well beyond the building itself.
This is the leapfrog opportunity for SunTerra. Rather than treating renewable energy solely as a future, island-wide project, the company is delivering systems for individual organisations now. SunTerra says it develops renewable energy and microgrid systems across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.

The project’s value will depend on how reliably it supports warehouse operations, how much grid electricity it replaces and what it costs to maintain. Those results will also help other Caribbean health facilities judge whether a similar system suits their needs.
For now, the Kingston installation offers a concrete example of a regional company applying distributed energy technology to an immediate public-service problem. Its promise is straightforward: keep essential operations running while reducing dependence on a single source of power.
