Markets across the Americas ended Friday with mixed results. United States and Canadian shares declined after Federal Reserve chairman Kevin Warsh maintained a firm position on inflation, while Brazil recorded another positive session.
Wall Street moves lower
The S&P 500 fell 0.25 per cent to 7,711.76 and the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.52 per cent to 26,402.42. Technology and semiconductor shares were among the weaker areas.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.02 per cent to 53,559.99, while the smaller-company Russell 2000 lost 1.4 per cent.
Despite Friday’s declines, the three main United States indices still recorded weekly gains.
Canada falls as Brazil advances
Canada’s S&P/TSX Composite dropped 0.8 per cent to 36,553.92, pressured by falling mining shares and renewed concerns about higher interest rates.
Brazil’s Ibovespa moved against the regional trend, gaining 0.30 per cent to 175,665. Softer employment and inflation data strengthened expectations that Brazil’s central bank could continue reducing interest rates.
Mexico’s S&P/BMV IPC declined 0.53 per cent to 65,484.32, completing an uneven final trading session across the Americas.
