Asian markets ended Friday with cautious and uneven trading as investors waited for signals on United States interest rates. Several major African exchanges performed more strongly, led by gains in South Africa and Nigeria.
Asia trades cautiously
Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.41 per cent to close at 66,405.56, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng edged 0.07 per cent higher to 25,584.79.
India’s Sensex advanced 0.43 per cent to 77,264.51. Mainland China moved in the opposite direction, with the Shanghai Composite declining 0.11 per cent to 3,952.
South Korea’s KOSPI dropped 1.8 per cent as momentum in technology and semiconductor shares weakened.

Nigeria also ended the week positively. The NGX All-Share Index increased 0.90 per cent to 241,298.47, supported by positive market breadth and gains in several large companies.
The figures showed a mixed conclusion to the week, with Asian investors remaining cautious while two of Africa’s largest exchanges recorded solid advances.
