Indian authorities have ordered Google to remove hundreds of Firebase accounts after identifying a pattern of criminals using the development platform to impersonate banks, distribute malicious applications and steal financial information from mobile phones.
Trusted services provide cover
Firebase is widely used by legitimate developers to build applications, host websites and manage databases. Criminal groups have reportedly exploited the same infrastructure to create convincing copies of digital banking services.
India’s Cyber Crime Coordination Centre requested the removal of at least 57 Firebase-hosted websites and databases during August. Seven were phishing pages imitating major institutions including State Bank of India, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank. Others allegedly collected credit card details, passwords and one-time security codes stolen from victims’ devices.
There is no suggestion that Google created or supported the scams. The company said it prohibits phishing, malware and financial fraud and cooperates with Indian law enforcement.
Fake offers open the phone
Victims are typically approached with offers involving new credit cards, reward redemptions or higher credit limits. They are then encouraged to install applications that resemble official banking software.
Some malicious applications can obtain extensive access to Android phones, potentially allowing criminals to monitor security messages, collect personal data and enter other financial applications.
Scale creates opportunity
India processed nearly 242 billion real-time payment transactions in the year to March 2026. This enormous digital market has improved convenience and financial inclusion but also created a valuable target for organised fraud.
Government data indicates that Indians lost almost $2.4 billion to alleged cyber fraud during 2025.
Trust becomes a banking asset
Removing fraudulent accounts may limit immediate losses, but the wider challenge is maintaining public confidence. Banks, technology platforms and regulators will need faster detection, clearer customer warnings and stronger controls around applications distributed outside official stores. As banking becomes increasingly mobile, security will be as important as speed and convenience.
