Blockchain technology is gaining a larger role within mainstream capital markets after Broadridge Financial Solutions revealed that its Distributed Ledger Repo platform processed $8 trillion in transactions during July. The scale indicates that distributed ledgers are moving beyond experimental projects and becoming part of the infrastructure used for daily institutional financing.
Volumes continue to expand
The platform processed an average of $365 billion in repurchase agreements each trading day during July, representing a 28 per cent increase from the same period last year. Monthly activity also rose from $7.5 trillion in June, when the daily average stood at $357 billion.
Broadridge, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, described the result as evidence of continued institutional adoption. Its shares climbed 4.14 per cent on Monday to close at $173.40 following the latest announcement.
A major market moves on-chain
Repurchase agreements, commonly known as repos, are short-term financing transactions in which one party sells securities and agrees to repurchase them later, usually at a slightly higher price. Banks and investment firms use the market extensively to manage liquidity and obtain secured funding.
Broadridge’s Distributed Ledger Repo platform allows these transactions to be processed using blockchain-based infrastructure while remaining connected to existing trading and post-trade systems. Securities used as collateral are represented digitally, enabling them to move between counterparties with faster updates and a shared transaction record.
The company says the platform can improve liquidity management, reduce operational friction and allow institutions to use capital more efficiently without replacing their established systems.
Tokenisation reaches institutional scale
The July volume is significant because it demonstrates a practical application of blockchain that is separate from speculative cryptocurrency trading. Rather than creating new digital currencies, the platform uses distributed ledger technology to modernise the financing and settlement of traditional financial assets.
Tokenised collateral can potentially be transferred and monitored in real time. This may reduce reconciliation work between counterparties, improve visibility over settlement status and allow assets to be redeployed more quickly throughout the trading day.
Broadridge also provides blockchain-related services covering shareholder voting, corporate governance, digital-asset custody and post-trade processing. The company describes its repo platform as the world’s largest institutional system for settling tokenised real assets.
Traditional and digital markets converge
Financial institutions have previously approached tokenisation through limited trials, partly because of regulatory uncertainty, interoperability problems and concerns about whether new platforms could operate reliably at market scale.
The latest figures suggest that large institutions are becoming more comfortable incorporating blockchain into existing operations when the technology provides measurable financial benefits. Broadridge has emphasised that its system works alongside traditional infrastructure, allowing clients to modernise specific processes without creating entirely separate operating environments.
Scale does not remove the risks
Rapid adoption will increase scrutiny of operational resilience, cybersecurity, privacy and the legal treatment of tokenised collateral. Financial firms must also ensure that distributed systems remain compatible with clearing, custody and regulatory requirements across different markets.
Nevertheless, processing $8 trillion in one month marks an important stage in blockchain’s commercial development. Its most consequential role may emerge not as an alternative to the financial system, but as technology embedded deep inside its everyday operations.
