Asian stock markets declined on Thursday as renewed selling in semiconductor companies reversed part of the previous session’s technology-led recovery. South Korea suffered the heaviest losses, with the Kospi falling as much as 4.2% during morning trading as investors reduced exposure to Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and other companies connected to artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Seoul leads regional decline
The Kospi opened 1.8% lower before extending its fall to 4.22%, reaching 6,320.11 during the morning session. Heavy selling by foreign and institutional investors placed pressure on the market, while domestic retail investors attempted to absorb some of the available shares.
The decline became sufficiently severe for the Korea Exchange to activate a sell-side “sidecar”, temporarily suspending programme selling for five minutes. Such measures are designed to slow automated transactions when futures prices move sharply and potentially destabilise the broader market.
Chipmakers return to the centre of volatility
SK Hynix fell almost 7% during the session, while Samsung Electronics lost more than 2%. The two companies represent a substantial share of the Kospi’s total market value, meaning that movements in their shares can have an unusually large effect on the index.
Investors remain concerned that expectations surrounding artificial intelligence may have risen faster than the earnings and cash flows needed to justify elevated valuations. Although demand for advanced memory chips remains strong, markets are increasingly examining whether enormous spending on data centres and AI infrastructure will produce sustainable returns.
Japanese technology shares also retreat
The weakness spread to Tokyo, where the Nikkei 225 fell approximately 1.6%. Memory-chip producer Kioxia dropped almost 10%, while semiconductor equipment manufacturer Tokyo Electron declined by more than 4%.
The broader MSCI index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell approximately 0.7%. The smaller regional decline showed that the sell-off remained concentrated primarily in technology-heavy markets rather than affecting every Asian sector equally.
Wall Street provides a weak lead
Asian investors also responded to a softer overnight session in the United States. The Nasdaq ended its recent winning streak as enthusiasm surrounding several major technology and AI-related companies weakened following quarterly results.
Advanced Micro Devices reported figures that exceeded analysts’ forecasts, but the performance did not fully satisfy the market’s elevated expectations. Investors have become less willing to reward companies merely for their exposure to AI, placing greater emphasis on profitability, spending discipline and evidence that investment can generate durable revenue.
Economic data adds to uncertainty
Attention is now turning towards the latest US employment figures. Private employers added 44,000 jobs in July, considerably fewer than expected and down from 95,000 in June. The official employment report is expected to provide further evidence about the direction of the American economy and Federal Reserve policy.
Despite the weaker labour data, markets continue to price a meaningful possibility of another US interest-rate increase in September. Higher borrowing costs would place additional pressure on technology valuations, particularly among companies whose market prices depend heavily on earnings expected far into the future.
Asian markets remain exposed to the AI trade
Thursday’s decline underlined how strongly South Korea, Japan and Taiwan have become connected to global sentiment surrounding semiconductors. The same concentration that produced exceptional gains during the AI rally is now amplifying losses whenever confidence weakens.
The longer-term demand outlook for advanced chips remains positive, but the latest volatility suggests investors are becoming more selective about valuations, earnings quality and the financial sustainability of the worldwide AI investment boom.
