The US House Oversight Committee has requested an interview with a prison guard who was on duty the night financier Jeffrey Epstein died in federal custody, reopening scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding one of the most controversial deaths in recent American legal history.
Congressional inquiry intensifies
The request from the House Oversight Committee marks the latest attempt by lawmakers to examine what happened inside the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York in August 2019, when Epstein was found dead in his jail cell.
Epstein, who was awaiting trial on federal charges related to sex trafficking of minors, died after being discovered unresponsive during the early hours of 10 August. Authorities later ruled the death a suicide by hanging.
However, the case has remained the subject of intense public scrutiny, with critics pointing to failures in jail procedures and unanswered questions surrounding the supervision of the high-profile detainee.
The committee’s request aims to obtain testimony from one of the guards assigned to monitor Epstein during the overnight shift.
Questions over prison procedures
According to official investigations, Epstein was not checked at the required regular intervals during the night he died. Reports also indicated that some security cameras near his cell were not functioning properly at the time.
Two correctional officers who were responsible for monitoring Epstein were later charged with falsifying prison records. Prosecutors said the guards had allegedly submitted logs claiming they conducted routine checks when, in fact, they had not.
The charges, however, were eventually dropped in 2021 as part of a deferred prosecution agreement. Under the arrangement, the guards agreed to admit to falsifying records and complete community service while avoiding criminal prosecution.
The decision to drop the case drew criticism from some lawmakers and victims’ advocates who argued that more accountability was needed.
Renewed political pressure
Members of the House Oversight Committee say the interview request is part of a broader effort to clarify the sequence of events leading up to Epstein’s death and to evaluate whether systemic failures within the federal prison system played a role.
The death of Epstein effectively ended the criminal case against him and prevented a public trial that could have exposed additional details about his network and alleged accomplices.
As a result, the circumstances surrounding the incident have continued to fuel speculation and public debate.
Lingering controversy and public interest
Nearly seven years after Epstein’s death, the case remains one of the most widely discussed and controversial episodes involving the US justice system.
Investigations by the Department of Justice’s inspector general concluded that multiple failures occurred inside the jail, including staffing shortages, lapses in supervision and procedural violations.
The House Oversight Committee’s renewed inquiry suggests lawmakers believe important questions may still remain unanswered.
Whether the guard agrees to speak with investigators could determine how far Congress is able to push its latest effort to revisit the events of that night.
