Ukraine will assist the United States and its allies in countering Iranian drone technology in the Middle East, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced, offering Ukrainian battlefield expertise in exchange for continued diplomatic and military support against Russia.
Ukraine’s battlefield experience becomes strategic asset
Speaking about the initiative, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine had gained extensive experience in defending against Iranian-designed drones used by Russian forces since the full-scale invasion of the country began in 2022.
Many of these systems, particularly the widely deployed Shahed‑136 drones, have been used by Russia to target Ukrainian infrastructure and cities. Ukrainian air-defence units have developed techniques and technologies to detect, intercept and neutralise these unmanned aerial vehicles.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine would now share this expertise with Western partners confronting similar threats in the Middle East.
Support in exchange for continued diplomatic backing
According to Zelenskyy, the decision reflects a broader strategic partnership with Western allies supporting Ukraine’s defence against Russia. Kyiv expects that providing technical assistance and operational knowledge will reinforce diplomatic and military backing from the United States and allied nations.
“We help to defend from war those who help us,” Zelenskyy said, framing the move as a reciprocal security arrangement.
The offer comes as the United States and regional partners face increasing threats from Iranian-developed drone systems across the Middle East.
Iranian drones reshape modern warfare
Iran has become one of the world’s most influential producers of relatively inexpensive but effective unmanned aerial vehicles. These drones have been used in multiple conflict zones and have attracted global attention for their ability to overwhelm traditional air-defence systems.
The widespread deployment of Iranian drone designs has forced many militaries to rapidly adapt their air-defence strategies, including the development of electronic warfare systems, mobile interception units and layered missile defences.
Ukraine’s battlefield innovations in counter-drone tactics—developed under constant attack—have therefore become increasingly valuable to Western defence planners.
Growing intersection of global conflicts
Ukraine’s offer also reflects the growing interconnectedness of regional conflicts. The war between Russia and Ukraine has increasingly overlapped with broader geopolitical tensions involving Iran and Western powers.
Iran has been accused by Ukraine and Western governments of supplying drone technology to Russia, allegations Tehran has repeatedly denied.
By offering assistance to counter these systems in the Middle East, Ukraine is positioning itself not only as a frontline state in Europe but also as a contributor to wider international security cooperation.
As the global security environment becomes more interconnected, Kyiv’s battlefield experience may play an expanding role in shaping how allied nations respond to emerging drone warfare threats.
