MSTRpay AB has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Sumaco Microfinance Burundi, led by founder and General Manager Dr Alois Misago. The agreement, formalised in Kayanza on 27 August 2025, represents a key milestone in the company’s East African expansion and establishes the foundation for MSTRcash Burundi S.A., a joint venture designed to expand inclusive, technology-driven financial services.
Foundation for a joint venture bank
The new joint venture is intended to evolve into a Tier 1 licensed bank under the supervision of the Bank of the Republic of Burundi (BRB). This development is expected to significantly advance financial inclusion in one of Africa’s fastest-growing financial markets.
Local leadership in negotiations
Negotiations were led by Ms Séraphine Barigenera, MSTRpay’s official representative in Burundi, whose leadership and knowledge of the local market proved instrumental in reaching the agreement.
Sumaco’s growth trajectory
Sumaco Microfinance is a rapidly expanding financial institution with plans to grow nationwide and extend operations into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). With portfolio quality at PAR30 < 1% and an operational self-sufficiency rate of 240%, the company offers a strong platform for scaling MSTRpay’s neobank ecosystem in the region.
Statements from MSTRpay
“This partnership creates extraordinary opportunities for growth. By combining Sumaco’s local market reach with MSTRpay’s global ecosystem, we are positioned to serve millions of customers across Burundi and the DRC.
Diversified activities
Beyond microfinance, Sumaco has established a diversified economic base including agricultural processing, coffee exports, and industrial ventures such as boatbuilding and solar panel production. These activities align with MSTRpay’s broader mission to link financial innovation with inclusive economic growth.
Next steps
The parties expect to finalise the joint venture agreement within eight weeks, submit a licensing application to BRB, and begin the robust onboarding of customers in Africa. A press conference is scheduled for late October 2025 in Burundi to present the new entity formally.
