European leaders have issued a united appeal for sustained diplomatic and economic pressure on Russia, underscoring that any peace agreement over Ukraine must include firm security guarantees and uphold the country’s territorial integrity. The statement comes days before U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet in Alaska for high-stakes talks.
Unified stance ahead of summit
In a joint declaration released on Sunday, leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the United Kingdom, Finland, and the European Commission stressed that while dialogue with Moscow is necessary, it cannot come at the cost of Ukraine’s sovereignty. The statement made clear that Ukraine’s interests must be central to any negotiations, with European capitals voicing concern that premature concessions could undermine long-term security in the region.
Reaction to territorial proposal
The call for a firm approach follows recent remarks from President Trump suggesting that “some swapping of territories” could form the basis of a deal with Moscow. European officials rejected this notion outright, warning that rewarding territorial aggression would set a dangerous precedent.
