The Hubble Space Telescope, one of humanity’s most significant astronomical tools, was successfully deployed into orbit on April 25, 1990. Carried aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery during the STS-31 mission, this revolutionary observatory represented a pinnacle of scientific collaboration and engineering excellence.
Named after the renowned astronomer Edwin Hubble, the telescope was designed to overcome the limitations of ground-based observatories. Earth’s atmosphere distorts and blocks certain wavelengths of light, hampering astronomical observations. Positioned approximately 340 miles above Earth’s surface, Hubble could capture images with unprecedented clarity, free from atmospheric interference.
The launch followed years of planning, design modifications, and delays. Over its operational lifetime, Hubble has undergone five servicing missions to replace aging components and install new instruments, extending its capabilities well beyond original expectations. These missions demonstrated the value of serviceable spacecraft and the remarkable abilities of astronauts to perform complex repairs in orbit.
