STOCKHOLM – One of Sweden’s most recognisable landmarks could soon bear a new name. In a bold proposal submitted to the Swedish parliament, Moderate Party MP Kristina Axén Olin suggests renaming Stockholm Arlanda Airport to “Alfred Nobel Airport.”
The idea, she says, is aimed at boosting Sweden’s global visibility and reversing the current decline in the country’s tourism sector.
“Sweden’s tourism industry has enormous potential, but it’s underperforming and bleeding,” Axén Olin told Upsala Nya Tidning. “We need to reflect on what steps we can take to lift it.”
The proposal leverages one of Sweden’s most iconic global figures — Alfred Nobel, the inventor and founder of the world-famous Nobel Prizes — as a branding opportunity.
“The Nobel name is known everywhere,” she continued. “If our international airport carried that name, it would automatically tie the location to Sweden in the minds of travellers. It would bring attention, build recognition, and spark renewed interest in Swedish tourism.”
Who is Kristina Axén Olin?
Kristina Axén Olin is a senior member of the Moderate Party and a former mayor of Stockholm. Known for her pragmatic and reform-oriented approach, she has long advocated for education, public health, and now, innovation in tourism strategy. Her experience in both national and municipal leadership gives weight to proposals that cross sectors, such as infrastructure and national branding.
Her motion is now under parliamentary review, where she hopes to gain majority support.
“I’m optimistic,” she said. “My feeling is that this will be approved — and that the airport will get a new name.”
If passed, the rebranding of Sweden’s main international gateway could mark a powerful symbolic shift — one that ties the country’s future tourism growth to its cultural and scientific legacy.
