Even though the far right is increasing, the EPP looks set to retain its status as the largest party group. At the same time, there seems to be a broad decline for party groups to the left of the scale.
This shows the preliminary election results.
As the UK has left the EU, the total number of seats in the European Parliament has decreased since the last election. The downs are therefore more than the ups.
Remaining as the largest party group, however, is still the conservative EPP, which looks set to grow by a couple of seats.
von der Leyen: “The middle holds”
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, is sure to be re-elected and she will seek a broad majority with her party group EPP.
- I want to continue working with those who support Ukraine, says von der Leyen during his election vigil.
The advance of the far right
Even if the centre remains strong, parties belonging to the far right will get more seats. Most notably, the French National Assembly, part of the party group ID, is expected to become the largest party in parliament with 30 seats.
Among the parties that do not yet have a party group, parties with ideology among the far right also dominate. However, it is uncertain which groups they will join or how they will cooperate.
- A right turn, but maybe not as big as you thought, says SVT’s Fouad Youcefi.
The Liberals lost the most
The biggest loss seems to be for the liberal group Renew. Their mandate looks to be reduced by 25 and for Emmanuel Macron’s party, the leader of the group, the defeat was so great that he called a new national election.
- I cannot pretend that nothing happened, says Macron, according to Reuters.
Red-green regression
Despite the Green Party’s success in Sweden, many green parties in Europe backed down. In total, the green group looks set to lose 21 mandates.
The social democratic group, S&D, also lost. But despite 19 lost seats, they remain the second largest party group.
Finally, the Left made an election where they look to maintain their positions. This as there are new parties in parliament that may well end up in their group.
