Large parts of Copenhagen’s historic stock exchange have burned down. Among other things, the building’s iconic spire has collapsed, writes Ekstrabladet.
“400 years of Danish cultural heritage are in flames,” writes Denmark’s Minister of Culture.
The first alarm about the fire came to the police at 07:36 on Tuesday morning, when smoke was seen spreading from Copenhagen’s famous stock exchange house “Börsen”. A large area in central Copenhagen has been cordoned off.
- This is our Notre Dame, says Copenhagen resident Henrik Grage to Danish TV2.
Preparedness director Jakob Vedsted Andersen tells the television channel that it is a “very, very large fire” and that the extinguishing work will likely take the whole day.
- It is burning from the basement to the attic in the middle of the building, he says and points out that it is still unclear what caused the fire.
Börhuset from 1625 is one of Copenhagen’s oldest buildings and is known for its spiraling tower. Shortly before 08 the tower collapsed, reports the Danish Extrabladet, which writes that “crazy scenes” take place at the site:
“A sea of people are trying to save the iconic and valuable artifacts that are normally inside the Stock Exchange. Among other things, you can see several people carrying out a huge painting,” writes the newspaper.
The Copenhagen police urges people not to venture out into the traffic in central Copenhagen unnecessarily.
“We have blocked off Børsgade, Knippelsbro and Strandgade. We urge people to stay away from the area,” says X.
“Terrible sight”
The building is owned by Dansk Erhverv, which is now reacting to the fire on the social media platform X.
“We have come to a terrible sight. The stock exchange is in flames. Everyone is asked to stay away from the area around Slotsholmen,” they write.
Even the country’s culture minister reacts to the news about the fire in the stock exchange.
“Scary images from Børsen this morning. 400 years of Danish cultural heritage are in flames,” he writes on X.
