The US music publishing organisation NMPA is suing Twitter for copyright infringement.
The NMPA, acting on behalf of 17 different music publishers, is demanding $250 million, equivalent to around £2.6 billion, in damages for hundreds of thousands of infringements of around 1,700 pieces of music, reports Variety.
“Twitter knows full well that music is leaked, released and streamed by billions of people every day on its platform,” NMPA chairman David Israelite said in a statement to AFP.
Suing Roblox
In its lawsuit, the NMPA states that “many Twitter competitors recognise the need for proper licences and agreements for the use of musical works on their platforms”. It further claims that the lack of licence agreements on Twitter leads to copyright infringement that harms music creators.
Two years ago, the NMPA sued gaming platform Roblox for $200 million for similar alleged copyright infringements. However, the two companies agreed on a settlement after a few months.
