Finland’s outgoing Prime Minister Sanna Marin is stepping down as party chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Finland, SDP. She announces this during a press conference on Wednesday, reports Yle.
The Marin government will resign tomorrow Thursday, says Sanna Marin, according to Yle.
According to Sanna Marin, her decision to step aside has nothing to do with Petteri Orpo from the coalition party now taking over as prime minister.
Nor that she has received criticism from within the party or that she has been offered a top European job, she assures.
I will continue as a regular Member of Parliament and will lead the government negotiations, she says.
It is part of the normal system that the party chairman comes and goes.
The Social Democrats became the third largest party in the Finnish parliamentary election on 2 April.
It has been a difficult year and I feel that I now have the opportunity to step aside, says Marin.
