Budapest has had a dedicated Michelin guide for over two decades, but this year sees the launch of the inclusive nationwide guide, covering 33 cities, towns and villages across the whole of Hungary. With it comes the addition of two new two-star restaurants and two new one-star restaurants.
Hungary offers a dynamic dining scene, from cosy cellars, inns and farmhouses to wineries and slick city waterside modern venues, as well as a wealth of homegrown produce, cheeses and wine. It’s also home to speciality meats, like the prized mangalitsa pork, tempting diners out of the capital to explore local culinary treats.
This year the country’s capital boasts a new two-star restaurant, Stand, where chef-owners Tamás Széll (who won gold at Bocuse d’Or) and Szabina Szulló champion their Hungarian heritage, delivering elegant cuisine from behind a glass-fronted kitchen.
Outside the capital, hidden in the cellars beneath the walls of the castle in Tata (main picture), chef István Pesti, has also been rewarded with two Michelin stars for his intimate Platán Gourmet restaurant, putting the small baroque town on the culinary map. Pesti and his team offer a sophisticated dining experience from their open kitchen.
Back in Budapest, there’s a new one-star, Rumour, where head chef Jenő Rácz has set up shop having returned home from Taian Table in Shanghai. Diners are served a playful 11-course tasting menu seated at a counter wrapped around an open kitchen.
Departing the capital and restaurant St Andrea, Ádám Barna has opened restaurant 42 in a modern townhouse in Esztergom in the north of the country, where he’s already making waves, having been recognised for his culinary skill with his first Michelin star.
