even new one-star restaurants have made the grade in the Michelin Guide Taipei, Taichung, Tainan & Kaohsiung 2022.
Five new one-star restaurants can be found in Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, while two new one-star restaurants can be found in Kaohsiung City in southern Taiwan.
This edition marks the first time Tainan and Kaohsiung have been included in the guide. “By adding Tainan and Kaohsiung – two cities with their own distinctive culinary identities, which have impressed our inspectors – to our restaurant selection, we also hope our selection will further satisfy local and international gourmets looking for unforgettable experiences, from fancy places to night food market stalls,” said Gwendal Poullennec, the Michelin Guide’s international director.
Here’s a roundup of the new stars:
Taipei – five new one-stars
Taipei boasts five newcomers to its growing one-star list, including seafood-focused Shin Yeh Taiwanese Signature; omakase-driven Yu Kapo; Holt, with European-influenced flavours, under Canadian chef Jeffrey Downs; Franco-Japanese Paris 1930 de Hideki Takayama; and Sushiyoshi, the third overseas outpost of the famous Osaka-based sushi-ya. This takes their one-star list of restaurants up to a total of 24.
Two-starred restaurants L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, logy, RAW, Shoun RyuGin, Taïrroir and The Guest House; and three-starred Le Palais all maintain their distinction within the 2022 guide.
Tainan and Kaohsiung – two new one-stars
This is the first time the southern cities of Tainan and Kaohsiung are also included in the guide. While Tainan has no debut stars to report, Kaohsiung now has two new one-star restaurants: Liberté, where chef Kenji Takeda flexes his French-honed muscle; and Sho承, the first overseas outpost of famed Tokyo restaurant Den, helmed by chef Fujimoto Shoichi.
Taichung – no new stars
Taichung retains its five Michelin-starred restaurants, which include two-starred JL Studio, and one-starred Fleur de Sel, Forchetta, Oretachi No Nikuya and Sur, with no newcomers to report this year.
The Michelin Guide Taipei, Taichung, Tainan & Kaohsiung 2022 in a snapshot:
• 1 three-Michelin-star restaurant;
• 7 two-Michelin-star restaurants;
• 30 one-Michelin-star restaurants (7 new for 2022)
