Lionel Messi’s star status reached new heights during the World Cup.
Spanish Marca reports that the Argentina captain’s shirt is sold out worldwide, in all sizes.
The Argentine Football Association has been inundated with complaints and, according to the newspaper, responds:
“We cannot do anything, even if it is in our interest to sell more. It is a matter for Adidas (Argentina’s jersey manufacturer) and there are problems in the country that affect them, for example, barriers to imports and the lack of labour, and also the demand of the people”.
Even Adidas is overwhelmed by the situation. According to Marca, the shirt manufacturer says that it knew that Messi’s national team shirt would be popular, but that the demand was extreme and that it is not possible to increase production from one day to the next.
In his home country, Messi has stood in the shadow of the legendary Diego Maradona, who did what Messi has so far failed to do – win World Cup gold with Argentina. On Sunday, he can change that when Argentina face France in the World Cup final.
Messi can also win the tournament’s top-scoring league. Before the final, he scored five goals, as many as France’s Kylian Mbappé.
